In honour of late former President Nelson Mandela’s vision of “changing the way society treats its children and youth,” Sasol has contributed R20 million to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust.
This donation comes as the Hospital Trust reaches a critical milestone in its journey – that of breaking ground and beginning construction of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg.
Madiba prioritised all aspects of child development and in particular wanted to improve the quality of health care for children. The specialised, state-of-the-art hospital will enable children in Southern Africa, irrespective of socio-economic background, to have access to quality paediatric care, while serving as an academic paediatric referral facility.
“The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital exemplifies Tata Madiba’s legacy of his unwavering affection for children and their right to a quality life. This facility will make a lasting and significant impact on the lives of many children who will come through its doors,” said Nolitha Fakude, Executive Director, Sasol Limited.
The hospital will serve as a training and research centre and will also act as a hub for health care centres throughout the region, contributing to building capacity and strengthening paediatric healthcare in the region.
Says CEO of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust, Sibongile Mkhabela: “To receive such significant support from Sasol is symbolic of the continued global support that the Hospital Trust has received from corporates and individuals alike who have heeded the call to help make Madiba’s dream a reality. For this, we are grateful.”
“We are extremely proud of our association with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and honoured to be part of his lasting legacy,” added Fakude.
