The annual South African Traditional Karate Council (SATKC) National All Styles Karate Championship was a huge success this past weekend at the Emerald Resort and Casino, Vanderbijlpark. This is the second year that Sasol has sponsored the championship.
The championship has grown in momentum, as the number of participants competing has doubled. The event was organised in association with the Vaalpark Martial Arts and Fitness Academy, Martial Arts South Africa and the SATKC. The tournament embraced all disciplines under the karate umbrella including, traditional karate, unison kata, traditional kobudo, kumite, kata and team fighting.
This was the first time that Japanese Traditional Karate styles competed with Traditional Korean styles in a single tournament. Teams from across the country attended this championship and competed with the hope of being selected to join the team, which will attend the TAFISA World Martial Art Games in Canada this year.
“At SATKC, we were extremely proud to host our second annual karate championship bringing together all styles, disciplines and organisations. The talent pool at this year’s tournament was remarkable, this was undoubtedly the best championship hosted thus far, as it truly represented our country’s best,” said Carl van der Westhuizen, National Tournament Director and of President Traditional Karate Gauteng.
One participant who excelled was Nico Vermaak, of the Vaalpark Martial Arts and Fitness Academy, who walked away with an impressive four medals at the tournament. Vermaak scooped a silver medal for forms and a gold medal for fighting, unison forms and weaponry. In addition, he was awarded with the trophy for Best Cadet of the Day in the 15 - 18 year division. This exceptional young athlete was selected to join the national team in Canada in August.
As a proudly South African company, we believe in building great South Africans through our numerous sponsorship programmes. Sasol’s contribution to the development of sport is in line with the organisation’s commitment to making a difference in the community in which it operates in,” said Louis Fourie, Managing Director, Sasol Infrachem.
Sasol’s contribution to the development of sport expands beyond karate to athletics, swimming, motorsport and soccer, to name a few.
