In the second leg of the Sasol Cross Triathlon on Sunday, 17 March 2013, Ben Swanepoel powered through the finish line with a time of 01:40:01 claiming the title in the men’s standard triathlon. Not far behind was Jeffrey Neethling with a time of 01:42:03 while Erhard Wolfaardt, winner of the previous event followed in third position with a time of 01:43:55.
In the women’s standard triathlon, Sylvia van Tromp emerged victorious with an impressive time of 01:47:14. Riana Robertson came in with a time of 01:50:07 in second position while Karyn Southgate finished in third position with a time of 02:04:59.
According to Dr Ivor Zwane, General Manager: Corporate Affairs, Sasol Sasolburg the race was a huge success and a day enjoyed by sporting enthusiasts and families alike. “The event attracted 524 athletes, from across the country. It is encouraging to see how many parents brought their children to participate in the race. Our investment in the triathlon is part of Sasol’s wider strategy of promoting the development of our youth through sport and encouraging a healthy, balanced lifestyle.”
Athletes could participate individually or in teams and had three race options: a Sprint Triathlon comprising a 500m swim, 10km mountain bike ride and a 3km run; a Standard Triathlon made up of a 1km swim, 22km mountain bike ride and a 5km run; or a Duathlon comprising a 3km run, 22km mountain bike ride followed by a 5km run. In addition, there was also a Sasol Kids Duathlon for children from the age of 5 to 15 years.
The final event takes place on Sunday, 24 March 2013 at Abrahamsrust, Sasolburg. Pre-entries can be submitted electronically through www.cyclelab.com.
