Aim
To support catchment management initiatives, share best practices and to encourage suppliers to also reduce their water footprint.
Our actions
According to analysis by the 2030 Water Resources Group, South Africa will face a water supply/demand gap of 17% by 2030. If sustainable socioeconomic growth is to be achieved, this critical gap has to be dealt with decisively.
Sasol’s demand from the Integrated Vaal River System accounts for about 4% of the system’s supply capability which in turn represents 80% of Sasol’s global water requirements.
Sasol is therefore going beyond its factory fence to actively help address water issues in the Vaal River catchment. We are exploring water-related issues in the region in a holistic manner, engaging, for example, with stakeholders through catchment management forums. We also actively participate in the Vaal River Strategy Steering Committee, which informs decisions regarding infrastructure, planning, and resource management.
To promote responsible water management in the agricultural sector – which is responsible for 40% of water use from the Vaal River system – Sasol sponsors farmers’ training days focusing on efficient agricultural water use. Web-based material has been published to help ensure the sustainability and expansion of this education and awareness initiative.
