For seventy-five years, water has been central to Sasol’s operations and growth. From steam and electricity generation, hydrogen production, utility and processes cooling and other direct and indirect applications, our business fundamentally depends on a reliable, sustainable water supply of acceptable quality. Quite simply—without water, there is no Sasol.
We recognise that water is a critical shared societal resource and are committed to responsible water stewardship across all our operations. With our significant water footprint come both considerable benefits and responsibilities. Our commitment to water stewardship goes beyond compliance,. it is about securing our water needs and using water responsibly in a way that safeguards both our operations and the long-term health of the catchments we depend on in a fair, resilient, and inclusive way.
Water is important to Sasol, especially in our South African operations as it is located in a water-stressed area. Our approach to water management includes continuous assessment, monitoring, measuring and reporting. We are a signatory to the UN Global Compact CEO Water Mandate and have adopted the Mandate’s Water Stewardship Framework in responding to water risks. Sasol is committed to improving our water use efficiency and pollution-prevention initiatives whilst partnering with host governments and others to resolve water-related challenges in the catchments within which we operate.
Sasol’s water stewardship is reinforced by several longstanding partnerships and international commitments:
Sasol has been an endorsing company of the UN Global Compact CEO Water Mandate since 2008. The Mandate provides a global platform supporting responsible water management across six core areas: direct operations, supply chain and watershed management, collective action, public policy, community engagement, and transparency. As part of Sasol’s broader commitment to responsible water management and sustainable development, the Mandate continues to serve as a valuable platform for aligning strategic responses to water-related challenges and opportunities.
Sasol is an active member of the Strategic Water Partners Network (SWPN), a leading public-private-civil society platform launched in 2011 to address national water challenges. Co-chaired by the Department of Water and Sanitation in South Africa and private sector, and hosted by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Business Foundation, the SWPN promotes scalable, cost-effective solutions across four thematic areas. Sasol contributes through its participation in working groups on effluent management, water use efficiency, stewardship, and agricultural supply chains. Further information on SWPN partners and current initiatives is available on the SWPN website.
Sasol also celebrates more than a decade partnership with the Water Research Commission, recognising our joint contributions to water research and innovation.
