Today Sasol in partnership with the Port of Richards Bay, its Lease Holders and multi-agency Emergency Management teams from the uMhlathuze municipality are staging a training exercise in the Port area on Uranium Road.
The exercise is a simulation only and is designed to train all personnel across the different stakeholders to manage an emergency where Sasol products breach handling protocol and containers.
It will be executed as if a real incident has taken place and will be conducted under controlled conditions. Emergency services will be activated, which will trigger the appropriate response protocol, including the sounding of various sirens and alarms.
During the exercise Urania/Duine road will be closed to traffic from 08:00 until approximately 12:00. To ensure that the public/employees are not inconvenienced by the exercise, traffic officers at the scene will direct people to available alternative routes. It is important to note that in addition to the Port emergency alarm, the emergency services will make use of their emergency vehicle sirens in responding to the exercise.
An established Emergency Response strategy is a critical element in ensuring that all stakeholders are well prepared to respond to any challenge and contributes to world-class product stewardship.
Sasol is a signatory to the Responsible Care® initiative driven by the Chemical Allied Industrial Association (CAIA). Sasol takes responsibility for all chemicals produced across the value chain – from manufacturing to final use of the product by the customer. Responsibility from cradle to grave ensures that consistent and rigorous safety measures are maintained through the product life cycle. No environmental impact or damage will be caused from this exercise.
