Johannesburg, South Africa – Sasol employees have helped to create a safer learning and playing environment for learners at St Vincent’s School for the Deaf in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

This is through the company’s Sasol  For Good volunteer programme, which encourages and supports Sasol employees to get involved in making a difference in the lives of those in our communities.  

The school received upgrades to its playground and ablution facilities to the value of R150 000. Due to the complexity and technical nature of the work at the school, a Sasol service provider was appointed to conduct the work which was completed at the end of February 2016.

The upgrades not only provide a safe environment for the learners to play but also ensure dignity through adequate ablution facilities.

“One of the levers with which we demonstrate our commitment to developing and supporting our communities is through programmes such as Sasol For Good, which bring to life our commitment to education, community development and environmental stewardship,” said Maurice Radebe, Executive Vice President: Energy Business at Sasol.

“We are proud to have also done our part in improving the learning environment for the learners at St Vincent’s, and look forward to engaging in other similar education-related initiatives.”

Founded 75 years ago, St Vincent’s has a proud history of educating children with hearing disabilities. The school currently has 270 pupils, who range in age from 22 months to 20 years. The majority of the learners come from areas such as Alex, Berea, and Randburg, and often have to walk distances of 30km and more every day to get to and from school.

The school also caters for learners from the rest of the continent. Currently, these include learners from as far as Nigeria, Kenya, Gabon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Sasol will on Wednesday, 4 May 2016, hand over the completed project to the school.
