Johannesburg, South Africa – Sasol Inzalo Foundation (SalF) has expanded its bursary programme to reach a broader pool of learners.

Established in 2008, the foundation’s mandate is to enable access to tertiary education opportunities for learners from low income households in South Africa and to assist in alleviating bottlenecks in the country’s schooling system. SalF is also involved in boosting the pool of vocational skills through its one-of-a-kind technical schools programme.

In the past, the SalF bursary programme only catered for learners interested in studying towards a bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related fields. This has now been revised. Owing to the pressing need to improve access to tertiary education for young learners, the Foundation has expanded its offering to include learners who want to study towards a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) or a National Diploma (NDip) qualification in the various fields of Engineering and Science.

In addition to covering the cost of fees, study materials and an allowance, the SalF bursary programme also provides psycho-social and academic support to beneficiaries.  This is to enable learners to successfully complete their academic programmes.

Since inception, the foundation has provided bursaries to more than 1 000 young people, mostly from township and rural areas, with many being women.  Among them are master’s and doctoral graduates who are shaping industries and assisting to improve the quality of education in South Africa.
