The 2014 Sasol bursary applications have opened and in a bid to demonstrate the value of science, engineering and technology in everyday life, Sasol hosted almost 600 top Grade 12 mathematics and science achievers, in Sasolburg and Secunda.
The event was attended by Govan Mbeki Municipality’s Acting Executive Mayor, Councilor Freddy Nkambule and other officials. Both days provided VIP hospitality to honour the students and encourage them to work hard in matric and tertiary studies to attain a successful future, potentially at Sasol. It included interactive videos about Sasol, photo shoots and network opportunities. The theme of the event, ‘Do you have what it takes?’ challenged students to explore the chemical and energy fields and showcase how their lives can change. Previous and current bursars provided firsthand experiences and valuable expert advice.
The MC for the event was Buhle Dlamini, founder and Managing Director of Young and Able. He said, “Education is the key to the future success of young people today. I encourage you to use all the opportunities around you to get a proper education and the Sasol bursary is your chance. ”
Sasol aims to assist in bridging the gaps identified on government’s national scarce skills list through its bursary programme and provide a stronger pipeline of qualified science and engineering talent. Last year, the company invested R40.8 million in bursaries and has 585 undergraduates and post-graduate bursars.
“Finding and nurturing our future talent is an important component not only for Sasol, but also increases the skills development that our country has to offer. These two top achiever days play an important role as it allows students to foresee what the working environment is like and spurs an excitement in the relevant fields,” said Monica Luwes from Sasol’s Corporate Graduate Services.
The Sasol bursary programme is recognised as one of the largest and most competitive offerings in South Africa. It covers all educational expenses, including tuition fees, residence and meals. This ensures that the student can achieve maximum potential at tertiary level and their only focus is to prepare for their academic career. Furthermore, Sasol provides paid vacation work and may offer employment upon graduation.
Applications for the 2014 bursary scheme closes on 28 February and students can log on to www.sasolbursaries.com or call 086 010 6235 for more information.
