The countdown to the 2013 Sasol Baja SAE – South Africa design competition has begun. The event will take place at the Gerotek Test Facilities in Pretoria on 25-26 October 2013 and will draw significant interest from engineering faculties from various universities from South Africa and abroad.
The annual event is an intercollegiate design competition run by the Gerotek. Teams of students from universities all over South Africa and two from India will design and build small off-road vehicles running on Briggs and Stratton engines of the same specifications.
An estimated 250 students from 20 universities and technikons, will be participating with about 25 cars in the two day event.
Michael Victor, Baja Rules and Technical Specialist said, “Baja requires participants to use real-world engineering practices to conquer the challenges associated with designing and building a recreational all-terrain vehicle. The competition also challenges the entrants to not only build a vehicle that will win the competition but also one that is feasible for mass production purposes, thereby incorporating the disciplines of racing and performance design with industrial design.”
Students are encouraged to function as a team to not only design, build, test, promote, and race a vehicle within the limits of the Society for Automotive Engineers rules that guide all Baja competitions around the world, but also to generate financial support for their project and manage their educational priorities.
Dumisani Mbokane, Sasol Sponsorship Specialist said, “The Sasol Baja SAE event provides the ultimate platform for local and international students to bring theory alive. Sasol Baja SAE has, during its 17 year history firmly entrenched itself as South Africa’s premier engineering inter-varsity competition. For the participants, this event enables them to gain invaluable hands-on engineering experience, whilst spectators are also able to gain insights into the importance and applicability of engineering to our everyday lives”.
The Baja SAE event has been a central component of the Sasol sponsorship portfolio, with the company having supported the event continuously since its inception in South Africa in 1996.
The 17th installment of the Sasol Baja SAE takes place at the Gerotek Test Facilities, West of Pretoria. The public is welcome to attend on the Saturday and entrance is free. For more information and directions, visit bajasa.esteq.co.za
