Sasol has emerged as winner of the Water Management Award in the 2013 Mail & Guardian Greening the Future Awards, in recognition of its highly successful collaborative water conservation efforts.
Judged by a panel of forward-thinking individuals involved in shaping environmental sustainability, the Greening the Future Awards recognises innovative efforts to create a cleaner planet without compromising progress.
“We are very proud of this accolade and it represents the benefits of collective action to enhance water management. As a large industrial user of water, we are committed to helping communities reduce their water consumption,” said Henri Loubser, Managing Director, Sasol New Energy.
“Our work, together with the Department of Basic Education in the Free State, the Department of Water Affairs and the Water Research Commission aims to educate communities regarding the importance of water conservation and improve water treatment technologies and the reuse of water in South Africa,” continued Loubser.
One such programme with the Emfuleni Municipality has saved 750 Olympic sized swimming pools of water over the past year, which could supply 5 454 households for a year at 25 000 litres each month. With Sasol’s help, newly trained community education and plumbing teams visited 49 000 houses to teach water saving techniques and to repair leaks.
To date Sasol has committed R8 million and leveraged an additional R9 million through partner contributions. The focus is to help communities reduce their water consumption by as much as 15% by 2015.
Sasol is also promoting efficient water use in its own operations. The company launched an initiative called Sasol Water Sense, which aims to align its water stewardship practices throughout its various operations around the world. It is a platform to co-ordinate and respond to water-related issues and address water security risks.
