Pack a picnic basket and a blanket and get down to the Sasol Bird Fair this weekend, at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden - a 300 hectare botanical reserve nestled in the mountainside of Roodepoort.
The annual Sasol Bird Fair, which takes place at the venue for the first time as its new home, will be filled with fun activities for all. The fair will run from 7 to 8 June 2014 and offers birding enthusiasts an exciting weekend programme including topical lectures by experts, guided walks, children’s entertainment, train rides and spot prizes. You can also enjoy the soft tunes of a Stings quartet from the National Youth Orchestra and a marimba band.
The aim of the fair is to educate and excite the public about bird conservation and inspire an interest in bird-watching. The Sasol Bird Fair is a project of BirdLife South Africa, sponsored by Sasol, in partnership the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).
Richard Hughes, Sponsorship Manager at Sasol said, “The fair will focus on families, with interactive and educational activities for children, which will inspire South Africans to safeguard our country’s birdlife. It is also an ideal platform for everyone to improve their knowledge of birds and learn about some of the measures being taken to conserve them.”
Entrance is only R35 per person, with discounted rates for scholars, children and pensioners. Entrance is free for Botanical Society of South Africa (BOTSOC) members. Gates open at 8am and close at 5pm, talks and lectures start at 9am.
