More than 300 grade 11 learners attended the Mpumalanga leg of the Sasol Schools Festival held at the St Thomas Aquinas School in Witbank, on 01 – 02 October. Held annually, the festival uses performing arts to expose and encourage learners to South Africa’s rich culture and a potential career in the arts.
The festival forms part of the South African National Schools Festivals and is organised by the Grahamstown Foundation of Arts Education Department. It is linked to various aspects of the schools’ curriculum and stimulates learners on matters outside of the classroom, in an interactive way. The schools that attended the festivals came from around the country and the festival has seen an increase in attendance by disadvantaged schools, as a result of the improved accessibility in different provinces.
The Sasol Schools Festival has grown in momentum, from initially hosting one festival in one province, to hosting four festivals each year. This year, the series kicked off in Free State/Northern Cape.
The keynote speaker at Mpumalanga Festival was Omphile Molusi, a Market Theatre Laboratory graduate who has been writing and acting in theatre since 2001. He has toured Scotland, Ireland, Chicago and London with his one-man show titled, ‘Itsoseng’. This show was presented at the festival.
Highlights from the festival included the play, Cockroach written by and featuring Jonathan Nkala, an interesting story of resilience and triumph of the human spirit. Another highlight was HUSH by the UBOM! Eastern Cape Company, which addressed some of the pressing concerns about HIV and AIDS. The festival programme included four productions and 17 workshops.
Pam Mudhray, Sasol’s Group Community Affairs Manager said, “We want to spur creativity in our learners in a meaningful way. This festival creates an important platform for dialogue among youth from different walks of life. It exposes them to critical thinking and strengthens their understanding of what it is to be South African. In addition, the festival allows established artists to inspire and mentor the next generation of leaders in each community that the festival is hosted in.”
Learners enjoyed the Nyakaza workshop held by Moving Into Dance.
