From a young age, Nivashnee Gengan, (25), from Durban always knew she wanted to be an engineer. Today, she has reached her goal and is a process engineer at Sasol’s Solvents business unit in Secunda.
Nivashnee graduated with a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of KwaZulu Natal in 2010, and attributes her success to the bursary she received. “The Sasol bursary is well structured and I always knew what was expected of me. I had access to a qualified team who always helped me when I needed assistance,” Nivashnee said.
Upon graduation, Nivashnee joined Sasol’s Graduate Development Programme (GDP), which allowed her to obtain the necessary field experience and be mentored by senior, skilled engineers. Completing the GDP is one of her greatest achievements, as it provided her with the platform to move from a ‘trainee engineer’ to a process engineer.
“The best part of my job is being able to take the theoretical ideas I learned and apply it to real-life situations. As an engineer, my daily activities include daily plant monitoring, troubleshooting a diverse range of process related issues and project work,” she said.
“In the next five years, I aim to be in a senior management position at Sasol. Being an engineer is exciting, as I am exposed to the diverse technologies used in the industry. I encourage students to become engineers, as there are numerous career opportunities in this sector,” she added.
The Sasol bursary programme provides an all-inclusive package providing tuition fees, residence and meals. The bursary has been designed to alleviate the financial burden on students, ensuring that they remain focused on their academic careers.
Applications for the Sasol bursary scheme will be accepted until 31 March 2014. Candidates interested in applying for a bursary can log on to www.sasolbursaries.com or can call 0860 106 235 for further information.
