Free State, South Africa – On Tuesday, 27 March 2018, the newly crowned national 400m hurdles champion, Lindsay Hanekom, will be in action at the fifth Sasol-NWU Senior International Athletics meeting to be held at the DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg.
Spectators can look forward to a jam packed programme studded by top national senior athletes as well as international participants from Poland, Qatar, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho.
Apart from Hanekom, the top South African athletes in action will be Julia du Plessis, the national high jump champion since 2014, Pieter Conradie (400m national champion in 2017 and 2018) and Rynhardt van Rensburg, the 2017 800m national champion.
Another athlete not to be missed is local hammer throw hero Chris Harmse, a former Common Wealth and African champion and reigning national champion since 1997. At the age of 44, Harmse is currently ranked 47th in the world. Former Common Wealth and African hurdles champion, Shaun Bownes, will also be in action. Bownes is the current holder of the World Masters 110m hurdles record in the M45 category.
One of South Africa’s brightest future stars, 17 year old Lee-Ann Blake will be in action in the 800m. She won the bronze medal at this year’s national senior championships.
Among the international stars is Piotr Lisek, silver medallist at the 2017 World Championships in pole vault. Lisek is one of only a few pole vaulters in the world who have cleared 6m.
The following items are on the programme: 100m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m for men, 3 000m for men, 400 hurdles, 110m hurdles for men, 100m hurdles for women, hammer throw, javelin for men, high jump for women, pole vault, triple jump for men and long jump for women.
The hammer throw for men will commence at 15:30, while the main programme kicks off at 16:30. Entry is R20 for adults and R10 for children under 18.
