In developing the sporting talent in the community, the Sasol Ormondeview and Sasol Riverlea franchisees in partnership with SAFA will be hosting the Sasol SAFA Johannesburg Region U19 Football Tournament on Sunday, 30 September 2012, at the University of Johannesburg sports field in Auckland Park.
Organised by the Greater Mayfair Local Football Association (LFA), the football tournament, a first-of-its kind community-based sporting activity, will see 10 LFAs battle it out to be recognised as the best in the SAFA Johannesburg region.
An added highlight for the football players is that a SAFA Johannesburg squad will be selected on the day that will further represent the region at various tournaments.
The 10 LFAs are, Alex North, Deep South, Eldorado, Greater Mayfair, Jowest, Midrand, Orange Farm, Rand Central, Roodepoort and Soweto. Each LFA consists of a male and female team with 18 players in each.
Sajad Koor, Sasol franchisee said, “We wanted to support a community initiative that would benefit both genders and develop the sporting talent in the community. This tournament will also bring the various communities together and enhance the soccer experience.”
To ensure fairness on the playing order, the teams were randomly selected on 23 September 2012, by the SAFA Johannesburg regional officials. There will be two stages in the tournament, comprising of 50 minutes for each game. Stage one will be a round robin, followed by the knock-out rounds.
