In an exciting first race in the South African National Rally Championship this weekend, Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton of Team Sasol charged across the finish line in first place, at the Total Rally in KwaZulu Natal.
Despite qualifying to start the race in sixth position, Cronje and Houghton exacting performance saw them comfortably managing the race’s pressure points, securing them six of the 10 stages.
“I am ecstatic, turning an overnight deficit of 32 seconds into a 39 second victory has made this event a memorable one,” said Cronje.
Trailing 39.3 seconds behind the winners was Johnny Gemmell and Carolyn Swan from Team Toyota Auris and in third place was Charl Wilken and Greg Godrich, from Basil Read. Team Sasol’s second team, led by Jon Williams and navigator Cobus Vrey, finished in ninth position.
“We are elated with the performance of our team. This is a great start to the rally season and we anticipate more podium finishes for the championships,” said Alan Cameron, Managing Director, Sasol Oil. “The vehicles embody the technology and innovation that is the hallmark of our products and are truly put to the test during motorsport events.”
Team Sasol comprises two S2000 Class Ford Fiestas that serve as real time laboratories running on Sasol Turbo Fuels and Techno Oil.
