With a few days left for the 14th annual Sasol Techno X, junior engineers employed by the company share their insights into what the attendees can expect this year.
Samiksha Latchman Candidate Process Engineer at Sasol said, “Techno X is an incredible exhibition, enjoyed by learners, educators and by us as junior engineers manning the stands. The variety of exhibitions and experiments available on the day expose attendees to the many facets of technology beneficial for anyone interested in engineering and science.”
Sasol Techno X is an exhibition that focuses on displays, workshops, tours, talks and hands-on activities aimed at enthusing learners, students and the general public about the endless possibilities of science and technology.
What started as a provincial exhibition to encourage the uptake of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects in high school learners, targeting 10 000 Northern Free State pupils in 2000, has now grown into an annual exhibition attracting over 100 000 students across the northern provinces of South Africa since its inception.
“Being an engineer is exciting - the constant daily challenges encourage you to be innovative in finding solutions to issues on site. You never know what a day will present to you, which allows us to grow as individuals and in our careers,” added Latchman.
Candidate Mechanical Engineer, Ashmeer Sukdeo remarked, “One of the things I enjoy most about being an engineer is being able to bring ideas to reality that can add value to everyday life.”
“Students will have the opportunity to interact with people in different engineering fields, gaining insight into what each discipline entails. This will help provide direction of which field of study they should pursue based on their interests,” added Sukdeo.
Both Latchman and Sukdeo agreed that key characteristics for all interested in pursuing a career in engineering, is a constant hunger to learn, willingness to put every effort into furthering yourself and your career and a dedication to your craft.
The theme for this year’s exhibition is, “Today’s Minds, Tomorrow’s Future.” The exhibition will unlock the vast array of possibilities and career paths available for students who chose mathematics and science-based subjects in high school.
Join over 300 schools at the ChemCity Eco-Industrial Park, Carl Bosch Road, Sasolburg from 11-15 August 2014 for one of South Africa’s largest career exhibitions.
