Sasolburg, South Africa – Experience triumphed at the 23rd Sasol Marathon on 4 February 2017 when the first and second positions in the ladies marathon were won by veterans. Julanie Basson from Johannesburg, won the women’s marathon title in 3:09:51 and Kashmira Pharboo (Lenasia) was second in 3:13:40. The third veteran lady to win her race was reigning Comrades champion, Charné Bosman from Johannesburg, who won the 10km in 37:36.
Two other veterans to win podium positions in the open categories, were the three time winner of the Sasol Marathon, William Mokwalakwala from Sebokeng, who came second in 2:29:14 during the men’s marathon, and Lindiwe Mthombeni from Sasolburg who was third in the 10km race in 43:55.
Two Lesotho athletes excelled at the Sasolburg Marathon with Teboho Lejaha successfully defending his Sasol Marathon title in 2:27:35 and Lesotho’s queen of road running, Mamorallo Tjoka winning the 21.1km half marathon in an excellent 81:24.
The men’s half marathon was won by Pita Makhoali from Bloemfontein in 68:13, while
Michael Mazibuko from Bloemfontein won the men’s 10km race in 30:01.
Allotted the best marathon in the Free State in 2016 by Athletics Free State, this Two Oceans and Comrades qualifier is most popular for its fast, flat route with gradual gradients. The route takes athletes through the residential, industrial and commercial precincts of Sasolburg. Apart from the different distances that cater for 42.2km; 21.1km and 10km races, the popular 4.9km fun run attracts all levels of fitness, even two grandmothers pushing babies in strollers.
According to Mandi Marlin from Alberton who participated in the marathon, “everything was perfect; collecting numbers, marshals, water points and facilities. Top class!!”.
“It was a privilege for me to start the 23rd Sasol Marathon this morning. Apart from attracting about 2 200 top national and international athletes to our town, the Sasol Marathon promotes a healthy lifestyle in our communities with 300 fun runners joining us for the 4.9km event,” said Louis Fourie, Senior Vice President: Sasol’s Sasolburg Operations.
The Sasol Marathon 2017 was again hosted in collaboration with the Sasolburg Athletics Club, and Athletics Free State.
