This past weekend, Sasolburg was splashing with excitement as over 500 swimmers between the ages of 11 and 18 years attended the Level 2 (L2) Regional Age Group Swimming Championship, held at the Penny Heyns Swimming Pool in Sasolburg.
The Level 2 championship is a platform to unearth the next generation of talent. Seals Aquatic Swimming Club from KwaZulu-Natal led the championship with its combined team scores. A swimmer who cemented his place was 12 year old Chris van Heerden, who was the top swimmer with 148 points. For the girls’ category, Georgia van Voorst, from Action Swim Academy, was in the lead with 98 points for the meet.
Shaun Adriaanse, CEO of Swimming South Africa commented, “The championship is one of the first steps in a young swimmers’ career that puts endurance levels to the test. We have a talented pool of athletes who will represent us in the future. Swimming South Africa is privileged to have Sasol supporting the aquatics sports and we look forward to a continued partnership with them.”
This is the second consecutive year that Sasol is sponsoring the event, organised by Swimming South Africa and the Sasolburg Swimming Club.
The L2 championship plays a crucial role to swimmers, as the stars who progress to the next round have the opportunity to be selected for international events such as the Youth Africa Games, Youth Olympic Games and Commonwealth Youth Games, to name a few.
Ivor Zwane, General Manager: Public Affairs, Sasol Sasolburg said, “This championship showcases the passion and talent of the young athletes. We believe that by supporting events such as this, we will assist with the growth and development of the participants to become South Africa’s next generation of swimming champions.”
Sasol is committed to supporting the development of our society at all levels and have invested in the upgrading of the facilities in Sasolburg – the Penny Heyns Pool was upgraded with nine heat pumps to provide athletes with warmer water for all-season training and events. This development and improvement forms part of Sasol’s R200 million investment in Sasolburg and Secunda, of which R10 million was allocated to the Rejuvenation of Metsimaholo Trust.
Sasol also sponsors the Sasol National Winter Championships, where swimmers will have another opportunity to showcase their talent. The event will be taking place from 30 June to 5 July 2014 at the same venue.
