On Thursday, 14 April 2011, Sasol in partnership with the Durban Port, Lease Holders and the eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services teams will stage an emergency training exercise in the Cutler Facility.

 
This training exercise is a simulation only, but will be executed as if a real incident is taking place. In addition to sounding the Cutler emergency alarm, emergency service teams will use their emergency vehicle sirens and tools in responding to the exercise.
 
An established Emergency Response function forms part of the Sasol Transport Safety Strategy. Practical training is a vital aspect of this initiative and ensures that all stakeholders are well prepared to respond to any challenge. Therefore, Sasol performs annual Dangerous Goods Emergency Exercises under controlled conditions, in conjunction with emergency service teams that would normally respond to emergency Incidents.
 
Participants in the emergency training exercise will be informed of some elements of the scenario prior to the simulation, and they will be given some unexpected challenges to which they will have to respond. Evaluators will be on the scene to monitor the emergency service teams ' responses for review on completion of the exercise.
 
Sasol is a signatory to the Responsible Care® initiative, as governed by the Chemical Allied Industrial Association (CAIA). As such, the company takes responsibility for the all chemicals produced - through the manufacturing process until the product is used by the customer. Responsibility from cradle to grave ensures that consistent and rigorous safety measures are maintained throughout the product life cycle. No environmental impact or damage will be caused as a result of the exercise.
 
Community members should not to be alarmed if emergency vehicles pass through the area. Should a real emergency occur during this period it will be indicated by the continuous sounding of the emergency alarm as indicated in emergency procedures.
 
During the exercise a section of Abadan Road will be closed to traffic from 06:30 until approximately 13:00 on Thursday, 14 April. Metro Police at the scene will direct motorists and employees to available alternative routes.
 
Members of the public are requested not to converge on the Port Area to try to observe the exercise. Access to the location of the exercise is restricted and only authorised and accredited persons will be admitted. Every effort to minimise the economic impact on Port operations will be made. Any road restrictions road closures will be limited to a maximum of 15 minutes during the exercise.
