Sasol Inzalo Foundation announce its partnership with John Orr Technical High School to create an academy of excellence
The Sasol Inzalo Foundation has partnered with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) and John Orr Technical High School on a 'Schools Improvement For Excellence ' initiative.
The project will offer excellence in teaching and learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and beyond, thus delivering school leavers effectively prepared to succeed and excel in education, training and employment in world of work.
According to Mpho Letlape, managing director, Sasol Inzalo Foundation, the principal of John Orr Technical High School, Mr J Venter, was concerned about the decreasing credibility of technical education and in April 2010 approached the Gauteng MEC for Education for assistance in repositioning the school to its former glory.
At the same time, the GDE was on a drive to improve the performance of education institutions in Gauteng, and was looking for partners for an initiative of this magnitude. Such an initiative is in line with the Sasol Inzalo Foundation 's goal of significantly and sustainably improving STEM education.
“With this in mind, the John Orr project was brought to life. It is a well-governed, effectively managed, cost effective educational institution that will embody a model for adaptation and replication. We are proud to be associated with the John Orr project” says Letlape.
A further goal is to make the John Orr a hub for non-students of the school, from an extended catchment area, in preparing them for further studies by offering parallel out of school programmes, targeting talented youth with potential.
