Sasol, Anglo American, De Beers partner to generate feedstock for renewable diesel production
Cape Town, South Africa – Sasol, Anglo American and De Beers entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) on Tuesday morning (4 February 2025) to pilot the production of feedstock for renewable diesel. This is an important initiative for both companies as they endeavour to establish the value chain for renewable fuels in South Africa.
Natref fuel supply interruption
On 4 January 2025, a fire occurred at the Natref refinery that caused damage to certain infrastructure around the Crude Distillation Unit. No injuries occurred, with the fire immediately extinguished and the plant safely shut down. Natref is a joint venture crude oil refinery between Sasol (63,64%) and Prax Group (36,36%), located in Sasolburg.
It is anticipated that the fire will negatively impact the production and supply of jet fuel, ULP93 and diesel from the refinery.
Topsoe and Sasol selected to deliver innovative e-fuels technology for an eSAF demonstration plant in Germany
- Topsoe and Sasol have been selected to provide their G2L™ e-fuels technology for the initial built-up of the German Aerospace Center’s Technology Platform Power-to-Liquid Fuels at the Leuna Chemical Complex in Germany.
- Once commissioned, expected in Q4 2027, the plant will produce, for research purposes 2500 tons per year of e-fuels mainly sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
- With €130 million of funding secured from the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), the plant will be the largest facility for production of e-fuels for research.

Sasol receives first large-scale renewable electrons from Msenge Emoyeni Wind Farm
Johannesburg, South Africa – Sasol’s first large-scale renewable energy project, Msenge Emoyeni Wind Farm (Msenge), has reached commercial operations. Located in Bedford, Eastern Cape, the 69MW wind farm comprises 16 turbines and is already supplying electrons wheeled through the national grid to Sasolburg Operations in the Free State.
